A quick note before our performance of Twelfth Night and subsequent debauchery, on the whole “spying” thing by Belichick and the Patriots. The media loves to manufacture scandals, and their handiwork has rarely more evident. What’s the big deal, guys? No one would have a problem with the coach’s watching if he didn’t have a tape recorder, so what’s the big deal if he has a camera? If it had been in the locker room, that’d be one thing, as a team has an expectation of privacy. But it wasn’t in the locker room; it was on the field. Teams try to steal signals all the time. It’s a perfectly acceptable strategy. The real issue here is the NFL’s rule. There’s no doubt that the Pats violated the NFL’s rule, but who cares? This is the same league that sees fit to regulate what height of sock you wear on th efield. We should use our own judgment rather than the league’s, and our judgment should tell us that this is no big deal. An awful rule and an awful reaction. Jesus.
I love the internet, incidentally. I feel very connected to the whole scandal, even though I’m over an ocean and four hours separated.
Twelfth Night in a few hours. I’ll leave you with this video.
